Practical backup guides
Back up a Synology NAS.
Prepare an encrypted Hyper Backup workflow for a future Arca S3 connection.
1. Prepare your NAS
Install or update Hyper Backup through DSM Package Center on a supported NAS. Pick a small shared folder for testing and keep a separate local backup.
Synology supports S3-compatible destinations, but ArcaCipher compatibility still needs end-to-end validation. This guide covers a file/folder backup, not a promise of whole-NAS recovery.
2. Connect when access is available
Once ArcaCipher provides tested connection details, create a Data backup task in Hyper Backup, choose S3 Storage and its custom/S3-compatible server option. Labels can vary with the installed version.
- Enter the supplied server address and access key ID/secret.
- Use the supplied region and connection settings where requested; do not guess them.
- Keep the HTTPS/SSL connection enabled.
- Select the supplied S3 bucket identifier for your Arca and a dedicated backup directory.
“Bucket” is the raw S3 field name in this tool. Use the exact identifier supplied for your Arca, which may differ from its display name. Do not reuse a directory belonging to another backup task.
3. Encrypt and retain recovery points
Select your test folder. Enable client-side encryption during task creation and save the password and exported encryption key somewhere secure away from the NAS. Transfer encryption alone does not encrypt the stored backup for you.
Choose a schedule, enable available failure notifications and set backup rotation to fit your space and recovery needs. Hyper Backup manages these versions; this does not imply ArcaCipher provides server-side version history.
4. Back up and test a restore
Run the task manually and review its result. Use Hyper Backup’s restore workflow to recover a sample into a separate location, supplying the encryption password or key. Open the recovered files and check their contents before enabling unattended runs. Use the task’s integrity check as an additional check, not a substitute for recovery.
Hyper Backup archives require compatible Synology restore tools; they are not ordinary browsable copies of your files. Keep a record of the task settings and recovery method.
If the connection fails
While ArcaCipher is in development, there is no live connection to troubleshoot. Once access exists, check the supplied endpoint, region, credentials, Arca identifier, NAS clock and permissions. Stop on certificate errors rather than disabling TLS validation. Never share secret keys, encryption passwords or unredacted configuration in support requests.
